CHANGING NARRATIVES TO ETHICAL AND DIGNIFIED STORYTELLING

How to provide a fair and ethical representation of the communities and issues you work with? These stories should serve the communities.

Have you thought about the impact that the harm that the publication of a story could have on the community or person?

Is the person you are portraying aware of where the story will be published? Do they have a say in the editing of the images and text?

Are they passive subjects or active collaborators? Why are you telling that story?

So many questions to take into consideration. This is why we are part of the Dignified Storytelling Alliance to be part of the ethical conversation and share them with you.

CONSENT PROCESS FOR USE/NON-USE OF IMAGES

Consent is a process, not a one-time event.

Do you explain to people that they own their stories?

Sometimes people change their minds. Sometimes their situation changes, and using their story may put them in danger.

What informed consent process do you use?

We can support you in

  • reflecting and revisiting  your consent practice,

  • designing consent forms in different formats,

  • thinking about the ethics and risks of story gathering.
