The collective creative process
El proceso de creación colectiva de esa exhibición virtual y de un video permitió crear un espacio de reflexión, pensamiento crítico y activismo en nuestro grupo de Sin Fronteras – LAWRS.
The process of collective creation of this virtual exhibition and of a video allowed us to create a space for reflection, critical thinking and activism in our group Sin Fronteras – LAWRS.
Se trató de un taller participativo de fotografía y video, de seis semanas, a finales del año 2020. Inicialmente habíamos diseñado un taller de diez semanas, a llevarse a cabo de manera presencial, con cámaras y salidas en Londres. Sin embargo, y en respuesta a las restricciones sanitarias debidas a la pandemia del Covid-19, esta primera idea tuvo que adaptarse.
Ajustar el proceso de creación colectiva, para responder a los retos del contexto de pandemia, implicó encontrar soluciones logísticas y tecnológicas y nuevas formas de encontrarnos. El proceso se trasladó a las plataformas en línea, y las jóvenes participaron desde sus casas, usando sus celulares como herramienta de creación visual. Así, todo el material fue creado y seleccionado por las jóvenes mismas, menos algunas imágenes de video que no pudieron ser creadas por ellas debido a las restricciones de movimiento.
Fue un reto para todas, las facilitadoras y las participantes, pero nos adaptamos, fuimos creativas y finalmente logramos reflexionar y crear de manera colectiva. Ese proceso resultó en un video colectivo y dejó espacio a cada participante para también tener su camino creativo y sanador invidividual.
It was a six-week participatory photography and video workshop at the end of 2020. Initially, we had designed a ten-week workshop, to be carried out in person, with cameras and outings in London. However, and in response to health restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this first idea had to be adapted.
Adjusting the process of collective creation, to respond to the challenges of the pandemic context, implied finding logistic and technologic solutions and new ways of finding ourselves. The process was transferred to online platforms, and the young women participated from their homes, using their mobile phones as a visual creation tool. Thus, all the material was created and selected by the young women themselves, apart from some video images that could not by them due to movement restrictions.
It was a challenge for everyone, the facilitators and the participants, but we adapted, we were creative and finally we managed to reflect and create collectively. This process resulted in a collective video and also provided a space for each participant to each have their individual creative and healing path.
El taller se llevó a cabo en colaboración con Fotosynthesis, buscando ofrecer un espacio en el que las jóvenes pudieran explorar su creatividad audiovisual. Claudia e Ingrid, facilitadoras del taller, acompañaron a las jóvenes en ejercicios creativos diversos en los que se tuvo oportunidad de bailar, dibujar, jugar, escuchar música, hacer fotografía, crear autorretratos, escribir cartas, crear un guión colectivo, y aprender a contar una historia de manera visual con ayuda del celular. Nos divertimos un montón y aprendimos de nuestros errores para mejorar colectivamente nuestros mensajes. A través de estos ejercicios creativos las jóvenes empezaran a sentirse cómodas con el lenguaje audiovisual como herramienta de expresión de sus inquietudes, reclamos, deseos y sueños.
Durante estas semanas de taller las participantes reflexionaron críticamente y compartieron sus opiniones y experiencias acerca de qué significa ser una mujer joven migrante latinoamericana en Londres. Durante las sesiones se abordaron temas como las barreras, dificultades y desigualdades a las que se enfrentan; sus estrategias, prácticas o formas de superación de dichas dificultades y de sus ideas y sueños de cómo se puede mejorar la situación. Las integrantes del grupo también reflexionaron acerca de los aportes y contribuciones de la comunidad latinoamericana y de su papel como jóvenes activistas en la sociedad británica.
Estas sesiones grupales fueron también un espacio para pensar en cómo está configurada su identidad, cómo son diferentes sus vidas a las de otras jóvenes en Londres, y para soñar con un Reino Unido más incluyente.
The workshop was carried out in collaboration with Fotosynthesis, seeking to offer a space in which young women could explore their audio-visual creativity. Claudia and Ingrid, facilitators of the workshops, accompanied the young women in various creative exercises in which they had the opportunity to dance, draw, play, listen to music, take photographs, create self-portraits, write letters, create a collective script, and learn visually storytelling with the help of the mobile phone. We had tons of fun and learned from our mistakes to collectively improve our messages. Through these creative exercises the young women will begin to feel comfortable with audio-visual language as a tool for expressing their concerns, claims, wishes and dreams.
During these weeks of workshops, the participants critically reflected and shared their opinions and experiences about what it means to be a young Latin American migrant woman in London. During the sessions, topics such as barriers, difficulties and inequalities they face were addressed; as well as their strategies of resistance, practices or ways of overcoming these difficulties and their ideas and dreams of how the situation can be improved. The group members also reflected on the contributions of the Latin American community and their role as young activists in British society.
These group sessions were also a space to think about how their identity is shaped, how their lives are different from those of other young women in London, and to dream of a more inclusive UK.
Dicha reflexión estuvo siempre acompañada del trabajo artístico y la expresión creativa. Para ello se facilitaron ejercicios creativos, no sólo usando la imagen y el video, sino también el dibujo, la escritura creativa y libre, y la escucha e interpretación de las ideas de las demás participantes. La mezcla de todas estas técnicas artísticas, vertebrada por la narrativa audiovisual y la posibilidad de contar historias a través de imágenes y sonidos, permitió la creación de la exhibición virtual y el video, resultados finales que elaboraron las participantes de manera conjunta.
Así, la metodología del taller se basó en una combinación de actividades de creación y de reflexión colectiva. En las sesiones grupales se generó un espacio seguro para que las jóvenes compartieran sus vivencias, sentimientos o preocupaciones, generando siempre la oportunidad para que cada una pudiera expresarse, tanto de forma creativa a través del arte como de forma verbal, haciendo referencia a sus propias realidades y a referentes externas -para inspirarse y aprender de mujeres que han marcado el camino como agentes de cambio social-. Así, se utilizaron las herramientas de storytelling para visibilizar sus propias voces y hacerlas llegar más lejos.
De esta manera, los resultados de esta exhibición virtual y el video desarrollado, representan un mensaje situado desde sus posiciones de mujeres, de jóvenes, de migrantes y de ciudadanas en la sociedad británica.
This reflection was always accompanied by artistic work and creative expression. For this, creative exercises were facilitated, not only using images and video, but also drawing, creative and free writing, and listening to and interpreting the ideas of the other participants. The mixture of all these artistic techniques, structured by the audio-visual narrative and the possibility of telling stories through images and sounds, allowed the creation of the virtual exhibition and the video, final results that the participants produced together.
Thus, the workshop methodology was based on a combination of collective creative and reflective activities. In the group sessions, a safe space was created for the young women to share their experiences, feelings or concerns, always generating the opportunity for each one to express themselves, both creatively through art and verbally, referring to their own realities and external references -to be inspired and learn from women who have marked the path as agents of social change-. Thus, storytelling tools were used to make their own voices visible and make them go further.
In this way, the results of this virtual exhibition and the video developed represent a message from their positions as women, youth, migrants and citizens in British society.
